Snow White T.I.E performance reflection

I believe that the moments in which we interacted with the audience were extremely successful as that allowed them to be apart of the performance and understand the message we were trying to portray more clearly. Moments like this include when the evil witch asked them to do the evil laugh, and the evil witch responded with that their laugh was rubbish, this allowed the audience to develop a dislike towards the evil witch and support snow white throughout the performance, especially when the evil witch asked who the fairest of them all was, they responded with snow white, and when the evil witch posed as an old lady the audience tried to warn snow white. Not only was this kind of interaction successful, the game show section of the performance was extremely successful as this made sure that the audience was paying attention and were able to answer the questions, which ensured that we were delivering our message about friendship successfully.

I believe that we could've improved emphasizing characterization further as in my opinion the dwarves didn't fully embrace their characteristics on stage, which if we had done, the performance could have been more realistic in a sense and possibly more comical. I believe that for grumpy i should've tried to act more grumpy, although we wanted to deliver a positive message so it was tough to be grumpy but positive at the same time. The way we distinguished characters could have been improved as Melissa played the dwarf Doc and so did I but I remained in the colors of Grumpy, and when I played Doc I wore circular glasses while Melissa did not. Also to make the transition of the evil witch to the old lady more believable, the old lady should have worn a grey wig and had a hunch back. I also feel like since we were overwhelmed with all the other aspects of the performance some lighting could've made the performance more visually pleasing and professional, as well as some improvement of the setting of the performance.

The response we received from the audience was unexpected, they interacted with the characters throughout the whole play even when without being asked to. While practicing for the performance we had always predicted the audience to be calm and quiet so when there was some sort of interaction planned out we made sure to have a second option incase the audience did not respond. Although on the day the audience responded to each and every single question or statement we said which was beyond our expectations. An example of this would be when the evil witch asks the audience to do an evil laugh, we had a back up where the knight would do the evil laugh instead and then try to get the kids to do it, but in the actual performance the kids responded right away and even while the evil witch was talking they were asking questions and commenting, this allowed me to expand my dialogue and improvise on the spot to develop my scene. The kids were constantly asking for high fives and we gave them high fives and completed their other requests which i feel allowed them to enjoy the performance more and eagerly try to understand our message. Not only did we get a greater response from the audience we also got unexpected responses, like during the boxing match we expected dopey to get cheers and grumpy to get boos but they both got cheers, so we did receive unexpected responses but the were unexpected in a great way.

I believe that we met our original performance objective, which was the importance of friendship and how friends shouldn't fight and should always resolve their problems if they disagree with one another. I believe that we portrayed this message clearly as the entire performance was about the friendship between snow white and the dwarfs and how they overcame their differences and stayed true to one another, and each time something significant along the lines of friendship occurred we included the different letters that spell out friendship, each letter with a meaning behind it. I am sure that we delivered this message as during the game show when we asked what the letter F stood for they were able to answer the question right away, and at the end of the performance when we asked them to rearrange the letters they had already known the word was friendship, this is because we were able to effectively portray our message about friendship in a way that they could comprehend and understand thoroughly.

My main contribution to the group has to be taking charge of the artistic components of set and costume, like the chimney, the roulette, as well as purchasing the snow white costume, creating the belts for the dwarves, bringing in boxing gloves for the fight scene, collecting names from the teachers to write down on the wheel, I also bought the candy for the audience which was the prize they would get if they answered correctly at the end and during the game show. I feel like i developed my artistic skills further when it comes to designing set and costumes, i also developed my multi rolling skills as I played grumpy, doc, the evil witch and the old lady, and for each character i made sure to make the distinguishable to the audience. For the evil queen i stood with my head up high and confidently with a loud evil tone, for the old lady i still tried to let the audience understand that the evil witch was the old lady so i kept the evil tone, but added a lower tone to it and whenever snow white would look away i would show them an evil grin, but acted innocently towards snow white, for grumpy i made sure to have a deep raspy voice and for doc I used a cartoony voice and tried to sound smart.

Next time I feel like that we should assign each person a certain role to take charge of, as the preparation of this performance was messy because we were all doing everything at once and some task weren't being done because we were all just responsible for everything, but if we had roles i feel like the preparation would have been more organized and we would have been more prepared to perform on the actual day. We could have also devoted some of our free time during lunches or after school to rehearse our performance as we were short on class time but we still didn't make use of our time outside of class time, so next time we should practice our performance outside of class time as well. I also feel like if we were to work collaboratively again we should set deadlines for when each person needs to complete something, this way nothing would be forgotten or left out from the performance, as for our performance the person who was supposed to bring the candy forgot to because we did not have a deadline for it and didn't make sure that he completed his task. Although at the end of the day the performance came together and the children loved the play and the characters and enjoyed interacting with us.

  1. *Please always use a capital letter for all names and for 'I'.

Your reflection is honest and considers all aspects of the task from devising performance material to the creation of props. This was a challenging assignment and I believe your group succeeded in meeting your original objectives. You have considered your strengths and weaknesses in this response and included specific examples from the play to justify your opinions. Some of your answers could be developed further to get a higher grade. I am glad this was a valuable learning experience for you and that you have developed the skills you will need to undertake the real exam task. 6/8
